Our New Day Sessions for 2022

From January 2022 we launched our Our Happy Place which are hosted at our Short Breaks Service in Sheffield S12. Our Happy Place is a day session service for adults with learning disabilities. Clients take a active hand in planning future sessions and are involved in constantly designing and evolving the service.

Since we started we have already worked with clients to plan, prepare and host a wonderful selection of activities, such as:

  • Baking lessons and activities,
  • Memorial day biscuits and poppy-theme,
  • IT skills and internet safety,
  • Gardening skills, cultivating, and planting,
  • Sensory and spa relaxation days including yoga,
  • Karoke sessions and talent contests,
  • Accessing the community & day trips,
  • Activites for Children in Need.

All of our activities include active and accessible learning such as use of powerpoints, tactile experiences, show and tell, and arts and crafts. We want clients to leave our sessions with something positive and be able to integrate any lessons and new knowledge positively into their own lives.

Our Future & Client Progress

Client progress is at the heart of this service - pro-actively increasing their knowledge, independent living skills, and fulfilment - in an engaging and entertaining way. Personal progress charts are used together with clients to plan their own targets and work towards them, using their goals and plans to help co-ordinate future session themes.

Our sessions also involve accessing the community such as visiting museums, cafes, and community centres. By accessing the community we are able to better build the social skills of our clients and inspire confidence in being involved in the community - such as travelling on public transport or attending other activities in the future.

We have lots of sessions and themes that have already been planned with our clients:

  • Independent living skills sessions,
  • Equality and diversity learning sessions,
  • Arts & crafts at the local community centre,
  • Wide choice of social activities and fitness,
  • Sensory garden area,
  • Healthy eating and the importance of lifestyle choices,
  • Shopping sessions include lists and budgeting,
  • Seasonal sport-themed days,
  • Working with the community for local charities,
  • Learning about others and their disabilities.
